100 Easy Guitar Solos!

Friday, February 1st, 2008

As you’re learning with Logical Lead Guitar — or from any source, for that matter — it’s essential that you apply your new knowledge.

Yeah, I mean you actually need to play some real songs and solos!

But I’ve discovered that most players/students trying to learn lead guitar don’t know which solos to start with. In other words, they might be a fan of, say, Metallica, or Joe Satriani, or Stevie Ray Vaughan — but they realize those artists are playing solos they simply won’t be able to understand yet. And they don’t know where to go to find solos they will be able to understand, learn, and play successfully.

They need something easier to get started with. After all, you’ve got to walk before you can run.

So I’ve been compiling a list of easy guitar solos that are great places to begin your lead guitar adventures.

I’ve tried to be reasonable here. I put this list together with my average student in mind. That means to play the solos in these songs you would have adequate guitar skills — meaning you can play chords pretty well and you probably know some complete songs, but lead guitar is a bit new to you. However, you are capable of playing basic single note melodies if someone shows you how — and sometimes while you’re playing guitar, you even stumble upon some nice melodies or simple solo lines yourself.

Truthfully, you should also know at least some of your pentatonic or diatonic scale patterns — you can’t play lead guitar very well without learning them. Whether you know it or not, if you’re playing lead guitar, you’re playing scales — so you’ll obviously be better, and learn to solo faster, if you learn and regularly practice your scales.

Also, some of the songs listed below are easier — and some are harder — than others. And in some cases the “solo” part of the song I’m considering “easy” may be just during the intro of the song, or it might be the lead guitar riffs between vocal lines during the verse — and not the “main” lead guitar break. In other songs, it is the main guitar break I’m talking about. I’ll try to notate that when possible.

But in general, I consider these songs a good place for players to start their lead guitar playing journey. I will be adding to this list, so check back regularly, and feel free to add your comments and suggestions — especially if you know songs with solos that would be easy for a beginning lead guitarist.
